Copyright Registration

Q: What is the benefit of registering a song copyright with websongs, as opposed to just "listing" it for free? Is the copyright registration legally binding?

A: The benefit of registering a song copyight with websongs is that it creates a permanent, date and time stamped record of when that song was first created. Simply listing the details does not. Copyright registration with websongs helps you prove that you wrote the song first. The certificate proves that you sent a copy of the song to websongs at a particular time on a particular day by uploading the relevant files, which is part of the registration process. If necessary, upon request (by prior arrangement and subject to a mutually agreed administration fee), websongs can provide evidence to a court of the fact that the song existed at that time and on that day.

Q: Are there any other benefits to registering my copyright work with websongs?

A: Yes. One of the key benefits of registering your copyright with websongs, particularly if you are the songwriter, is that websongs may be able to licence it for you, so that you get paid for its use. For example, websongs often gets requests from broadcasters such as the BBC that broadcast their digital services into many countries at the same time - looking for music that can be licensed on a worldwide basis from one source. websongs is that source, and yours could be the song that gets used. If websongs is asked about your song, we will contact you and let you know, and (subject to your first agreeing the fee that you will receive), websongs will licence your work to that broadcaster or film company and make sure that you get paid.

Q: Why is there a charge to register a copyright on websongs? How much does it cost? What do I get for my money?

A: Whilst websongs is essentially a free service, we do charge a small admin fee to register copyrights. The cost is £1 per song or recording (for a 10 year registration). When you send in evidence of the song or recording, you get a websongs Copyright Registration Certificate sent to your e-mail address. You can also download further copies of that Certificate from websongs at any time.

Q: How do I know that my Copyright Registration has been successful?

A: You will receive your Copyright Registration Certificate at the email address that you have registered with websongs.
